Ah, Easter. One of those times of the year where we just resign ourselves to eating crap. Because it’s tradition, right? And you know what? A little treat here or there is fun, and quite often good for the soul. But are you munching down on goodies that are just plain bad?
There are hot cross buns then there are hot cross buns. You may have seen the furore that erupted recently on social media about toxic “bun spice” chemicals that are used to cut corners in mass produced products. And then there are the preservatives (did you think hot cross buns would REALLY last for weeks on a shelf unless they had something sinister added?). And then there’s the poor quality, cheap and cheerful ingredients like sulphur-laden dried fruit, excessive amounts of sugar, and whatever-it-was-they-used-for-that-cross. Ok, they’re cheap, but NOT very cheerful when they leave you feeling like crap.
If you live near a lovely artisan bakery, farmers market, health food store or gourmet grocer, and they stock beautiful sourdough, wholefood hot cross buns (and you can cope with a little bit of gluten every now and then), fair play to you – go and devour your treats with lashings of real butter, and enjoy every mouthful.
But before you cave in to a full scale Easter blowout… stop! Give the following hot cross bun recipes a try. They’re gluten, dairy and cane sugar free, paleo-friendly, and I think they taste waaaaaayyyy better than those sorry-assed mass produced poor-excuses-for-buns out there.
Behold… My healthy hot cross bun roundup! Enjoy (nom, nom, nom…).
