It happens to all of us… A meal at a restaurant, getting caught out on a road trip, the well-meaning friend that said they had cooked gluten free and then fed you spelt, or you just couldn’t resist those cupcakes (they were just too cute!). You’ve eaten the gluten, and now it’s begun – the bloating, gurgling, cramping, the full feeling, and if you’re lucky – a few quick trips to the toilet. But never fear! Here’s a simple survival kit that you can make up and pop in your handbag, for some anywhere, anytime digestive relief.
1. A good digestive enzyme supplement
Digestive enzymes help to switch on the digestion, break down food, and get things moving. A couple of these after a big meal can help you feel a lot more comfortable.
2. Room temperature stable probiotics
It used to be that all probiotics had to be kept in the fridge. But now there are a couple of brands that are available at health food shops that don’t ever need to be refrigerated. Perfect for travelling and keeping in your bag, these little gems put good bacteria into the gut to settle the digestion.
3. Herbal teas
Chamomile, peppermint, fennel and ginger all help to calm the tummy. Grab a couple of tea bags of your favourite (mine is ginger – so yummy!), and all you will need then is a cup of hot water.
Grab yourself a cute little coin purse, pop in a couple of each of the capsules and tea bags, and your food intolerance first aid kit is ready to go.
