Welcome to Gluten Free Friday
Every Friday I will be posting some GF goodness on the blog – it might be a recipe, a new product review, or in today’s case, a hot shopping tip. So coeliacs and gluten free fans everywhere – lock in it 🙂 Ok, here we go with the first installment…
One of the most misleading things about GF food, is that “if it’s gluten free, it must be good for you.” Yes, these products are designed to prevent you from experiencing horrible digestive symptoms or an allergic reaction, but watch out – they may contain other not-so-good stuff to improve taste and texture, or to increase shelf life.
Here’s a few that I’ve come across in the supermarket:
Gluten free cup-a-soups loaded with MSG and milk solids (did you know that people with coeliac disease are more likely to develop an intolerance to dairy or lactose?)
Gluten free rice crackers containing MSG, milk solids, and tons of salt
Gluten free breakfast cereals loaded with sugar and processed grains
Gluten free cake mixes containing caramel 150d food colouring (eek!), emulsifier 477 (propylene glycol ester of fatty acids – yuk!), and antioxidant 320 (butylated hydroxyanisole…WTF?)
So, just because something has “gluten free” on the front of the label, please don’t assume it’s healthy. Turn that product over and keep reading, because educating yourself is the key to getting healthy.
