This is a tried and tested technique to get your digestion cranking first thing in the morning. Now, hear me out, because at first you might be like “oooh…errr…shudder…” but I swear this really works, you just have to give it a chance.
Ok, are you ready? Every morning, as soon as you get out of bed, the first thing I want you to do is grab a glass of water (preferably warm water) and add the following:
2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar
the juice of half a lemon (freshly squeezed)
Now, don’t screw up your nose! I promise you will get used to it, and the benefits are sooooo worth it. First of all, the bitter taste stimulates something called the vagus nerve. This nerve is directly connected to your liver and digestive system. So when you wake this fella up, he tells your digestion to get moving. Enzymes are released to break down food. The liver and the gallbladder come out of hibernation and in turn they have a party with your bowel. Everything is connected after all.
Secondly, even though lemon juice and apple cider vinegar are acidic, they help to alkalize the body. This means they help to flush out the crap that’s sitting, stagnating in hard to reach places. Do you exercise a lot? This will help to move the waste out of your joints. Want clear skin? Get stuck in. It costs next to nothing but it packs a serious punch. This one simple drink in the morning can do so much.
Ok, say you’re already doing this in the mornings and you are ready to ramp things up a little (in other words, you’re hardcore like me). Here’s a cool trick. Add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the drink. Wooooyaaaaa!!! Not only will you know you’re alive, but this really helps to get the circulation pumping for the day. It’s almost as good as coffee (I’m married to a barista so I’m not allowed to say that anything is better than coffee or I will lose all my coconut latte privileges!).
So there you are. Give it a go, try not to screw up your face when you drink it – that just causes wrinkles (game face on, people!). I dare you to do it for a week and tell me you don’t feel better!
